Saadiyat Island’s cultural landscape is set for another major addition, with the announcement of Dar al Funoon Abu Dhabi, a new performing arts destination that will further enhance the city’s status.
Meaning “House of the Arts”, this world-class venue is expected to open in 2030 and will become a dedicated home for live performance, bringing together audiences and creative talent from across the region and beyond.
Positioned near the Saadiyat Cultural District, the project adds another layer to the island’s growing reputation as a global centre for arts and culture and will sit alongside some of Abu Dhabi’s most significant cultural institutions, inspiring an even richer destination for visitors and residents.

A New Stage for World-Class Performances
Announced in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, this is a year-round home for the arts, with programming expected throughout the calendar year.
Set to host grand-scale opera productions, ballet performances, theatre shows, and live music, this majestic institution aims to showcase a wide spectrum of artistic expression under one roof.
Even more impressive, the venue will also support creative development through artist residencies, international collaborations, and partnerships with leading cultural organisations, helping to foster new ideas and artistic exchange in the country.
A Landmark Design by Frank Gehry
The building itself is expected to be a work of art. Designed by the late architect Frank Gehry, whose projects such as the Biomuseo in Panama, the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris, have shaped visionary architecture around the world.
Inspired by movement and performance, Dar al Funoon’s sculptural design is intended to blur the line between architecture and art, creating a striking visual presence as soon as you set eyes on it.

One Of the Region’s Largest Performing Arts Destinations
Once open, Dar al Funoon will feature multiple performance spaces designed to host productions of varying scales, including a large indoor theatre, an open-air amphitheatre, a dedicated studio theatre, and an intimate jazz venue, collectively accommodating more than 6,000 guests.
With construction now underway, the project represents another bold step in Abu Dhabi’s long-term cultural vision. By 2030, Dar al Funoon is expected to become a landmark destination where creativity and cultural exchange take centre stage.
