This observance and jubilee was founded and launched by Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the Mother of the Nation, whose work has played a major role in advancing women’s participation and development in the UAE.
The Story Behind August 28
There is a reason the date never changes. August 28 marks the anniversary of the establishment of the General Women’s Union (GWU) in 1975, founded under the leadership of Sheikha Fatima.
This organisation became an important platform for supporting Emirati women and promoting their education, development, and participation in national life across the regions.
The first Emirati Women’s Day was held in 2015, giving the UAE an annual opportunity to recognise this story so it’s not forgotten.
How Does Abu Dhabi Celebrate?
In the capital, the occasion is typically marked through a mix of recognition, community initiatives, cultural activities, workplace celebrations, and events highlighting Emirati women and their achievements.
