Inside Abu Dhabi’s Rise as a Global Financial Hub

Away from the beaches, cultural landmarks, and headline-making developments, Abu Dhabi has quietly been building one of the region’s most ambitious financial ecosystems.

On Al Maryah Island, the glass towers house investment firms, banks, asset managers, and technology companies, with high levels of trade flowing through the financial centre, which has grown at remarkable speed. In the heart of this transformation is ADGM.

Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM)

For anyone unfamiliar with Abu Dhabi’s financial landscape, ADGM is the international financial centre at the heart of the capital’s business ecosystem.

Established in 2015, it was created with ambition beyond simply providing office space for financial companies. Today, it provides the legal, regulatory, and commercial infrastructure for businesses spanning asset management, banking, wealth management, capital markets, fintech, and more.

Its growth over the past decade has been considerable. By the end of 2025, ADGM had 12,671 active licences and more than 44,000 people working across its jurisdiction.

Assets under management also rose by 36% during the year, with 171 asset and fund managers overseeing 244 funds.

The momentum has continued into 2026. At the end of the first quarter, ADGM had reached 13,353 active licences, while its workforce had grown to 47,047. 365 financial services firms are also operating within the centre, alongside 179 asset and fund managers.

For a financial centre that opened its doors just over a decade ago, these numbers are difficult to overlook when discussing global financial districts.

Global Financial Heavyweights Are Arriving

Perhaps the clearest indication of Abu Dhabi’s growing financial importance is the calibre of companies choosing to establish a presence here.

Major international names including BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, PGIM, Nuveen, General Atlantic, and GQG Partners have operations in ADGM, creating a concentration of global financial expertise in one part of the capital.

And the expansion has not slowed. Recent moves from major investment firms have included Blue Owl Capital, Vista Equity Partners, and Man Group, adding to a growing collection of international players using Abu Dhabi as a base for their regional ambitions.

This means the financial district is becoming more than a city where companies want to open an office. It is becoming a meeting point for international capital and Abu Dhabi’s own increasingly sophisticated financial ecosystem.

Finance Is Getting A Tech Upgrade

The story doesn’t stop with traditional investment and banking either. Fintech, digital assets, artificial intelligence and alternative investments are becoming increasingly important to Abu Dhabi’s financial ambitions, with ADGM positioning itself as a place where established institutions and newer financial businesses can develop alongside each other.

That ambition is also reflected in FIDA, Abu Dhabi’s FinTech, Insurance, Digital, and Alternative Assets cluster. Announced during Abu Dhabi Finance Week, the initiative is expected to add AED 56 billion to Abu Dhabi’s GDP by 2045, generate 8,000 skilled jobs and attract at least AED 17 billion in investment.

It is another sign that the capital is thinking about finance as an industry that can evolve alongside technology, rather than one confined to traditional banks and investment houses.

Abu Dhabi Finance Week Brings the World to the Capital

Then there is Abu Dhabi Finance Week, which is one of the biggest showcases of the capital’s growing financial influence.

Returning in December 2026, the event brings together policymakers and business leaders from around the world, turning Abu Dhabi into a global meeting point for conversations about where markets and investment are heading next.

The scale of the 2025 edition proved how far it has come. More than 35,000 people attended, with 800-plus speakers, 65-plus events and representatives from more than 175 nationalities. Collectively, the event brought together organisations representing more than US $62 trillion in assets.

Those figures are not simply impressive event statistics. They demonstrate the size of the financial community now gathering in Abu Dhabi.

A New Chapter for Abu Dhabi

The interesting thing about Abu Dhabi’s financial story is that much of this growth has happened without always being visible to the wider public.

However, if you look towards Al Maryah Island, the picture becomes much clearer. Global investment firms are setting up UAE bases, financial institutions are expanding their operations, and fintech businesses are becoming part of a rapidly developing ecosystem.

ADGM is at the centre of it, but the bigger story is the ecosystem being built around it. For a city already investing heavily in technology and prime real estate, finance is becoming another defining part of Abu Dhabi’s identity, and one that could prove just as significant for its next chapter.
