UAE confirms public holiday for Islamic New Year

Another long weekend incoming! That’s right, the authorities have officially confirmed the dates for the Islamic New Year holiday for the public and private sectors in the UAE.

The UAE government has declared Friday, June 27, as a holiday to mark the first day of the Islamic New Year. This makes it a three-day long weekend for federal and private employees.

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) announced the same on a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Normal working hours are expected to resume on Monday, June 30.

The Islamic, or Hijri, calendar is based on lunar months. So the New Year begins on the first day of Muharram, the calendar’s first month.

The date was predicted as per the approved list of official holidays for 2025, issued by the UAE Cabinet. However, as with all Islamic holidays in the country, the exact date is always determined based on moon-sighting procedures.

So with another long weekend for the Islamic New Year on the horizon, it’s time to start making some plans! From summer camps for the kids to things to do indoors – there’s a lot of fun to be had in the UAE.
