Abu Dhabi’s connectivity is set for a significant boost as Etihad Airways unveils plans to expand its African network with six new destinations.
The move marks a clear step forward in the airline’s growth strategy, strengthening links between Abu Dhabi and key cities across the continent.
Scheduled to launch in phases from late 2026 to early 2027, the new routes are expected to provide smoother travel options between the regions.

Six Destinations Added to the Network
The expansion will introduce direct flights to Accra, Lagos, Asmara, Harare, Kinshasa and Lubumbashi.
By connecting to both well-established and less frequently served destinations, Etihad is widening access to regions that have traditionally required longer, multi-stop journeys.
The additions are expected to benefit both leisure travellers and business passengers seeking more efficient routes into Africa.
Phased rollout through 2027
Flights will be introduced gradually, beginning in November 2026 and continuing into early 2027. This phased approach allows the airline to scale operations in line with demand while maintaining flexibility across its network.
Key routes are likely to see multiple weekly services, particularly on high-traffic corridors, helping ensure consistent connectivity between the UAE and African countries.
Boosting Abu Dhabi’s global position
The new routes play into a broader ambition to position Abu Dhabi as a central link between Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
By reducing reliance on indirect connections, the expansion is expected to shorten travel times and improve overall accessibility for travellers.
Continued network growth
This expansion reflects Etihad’s ongoing efforts to build a more comprehensive global map.
With a growing emphasis on emerging markets, the airline is steadily broadening its reach while enhancing options for travellers departing from Abu Dhabi. For both residents and visitors, the result is a more connected gateway to one of the world’s most dynamic regions.
