Abu Dhabi Police Issue Safety Guidelines for Swimming this Summer

As temperatures continue to climb, home swimming pools are becoming a popular place for families to cool off. Abu Dhabi Police is urging parents and caregivers to take extra precautions, with close supervision essential whenever children are in or around the water.

Children should never be left to swim alone, even for a few moments, as accidents can happen quickly. Parents are also being advised to put away smartphones and avoid other distractions while supervising younger swimmers.

The guidance forms part of Abu Dhabi Police’s Safe Summer campaign, which aims to reduce drowning incidents and protect children throughout the school holidays. Families are encouraged to review safety measures around home pools and make sure a responsible adult is always present during swimming sessions.

Abu Dhabi Police has also outlined several practical steps families can take to make home swimming pools safer. These include installing secure fencing, keeping access doors firmly closed, using non-slip flooring and ensuring that suitable safety equipment is readily available.

Young children should wear life jackets or flotation aids whenever necessary, particularly in deeper pools, at waterparks or during other water-based activities. However, these should never replace close adult supervision.

Parents and caregivers are also encouraged to introduce children to basic swimming and water-safety skills from an early age. Age-appropriate lessons can help children feel more confident in the water and understand how to respond safely in an emergency.

Learning first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation can provide an additional layer of protection, helping adults respond quickly while waiting for emergency services to arrive.

Abu Dhabi Police stressed that protecting children around water is a shared responsibility, beginning with greater awareness and careful safety practices at home.
