Khalifa City’s E20 Highway in Abu Dhabi is Getting 5 Lanes

Getting around Abu Dhabi is set to become smoother, with a major new road expansion project planned for the E20 highway.

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced a series of infrastructure upgrades designed to ease congestion, improve traffic flow and support growing communities across the emirate.

Among the biggest changes will be the expansion of the highway from three lanes to five, creating additional capacity along one of Abu Dhabi’s key routes. The project will also introduce around 10.5 kilometres of new ramps and loops, as well as four new bridges.

Further improvements are planned around Khalifa City and the Zayed International Airport area, including 1.5 kilometres of internal roads and eight new traffic-light junctions designed to improve safety and access.

The development will also bring a greener look to the route, with landscaped areas planned along the E20. Existing trees will be carefully relocated and replanted as part of efforts to protect the surrounding environment.

Behind the scenes, the project includes extensive utility upgrades, with 62 kilometres of stormwater drainage networks, 37 kilometres of irrigation networks and 485 modern streetlights set to be installed.

The expansion forms part of Abu Dhabi’s wider plans to modernise its transport network and make everyday journeys across the emirate more efficient. The upgrades will also help meet rising travel demand as the capital’s population continues to grow.
