The Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi Introduces its Newest Resident

There’s a new species that will be turning heads at The Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, and it’s not what you might expect.

The attraction has welcomed the Northern Luzon giant cloud rat, a rare arboreal mammal native to the Philippines, as part of a wider effort to expand its biodiversity offering.

A Rodent Unlike Most Others

Despite its name, the Northern Luzon giant cloud rat is far removed from the urban rodents most people associate with the term.

This species is tree-dwelling, slow-moving and largely nocturnal, spending much of its life high in the forest canopy. Covered in thick, soft fur and equipped with a long, bushy tail, it is well adapted to navigating branches rather than ground-level terrain.

Its diet is entirely plant-based, consisting mainly of leaves, fruits and bark. This makes it an important part of its ecosystem, quietly contributing to the health of the forests it inhabits.

From Philippine Forests to Abu Dhabi

The species is endemic to Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines, and thrives in dense tropical and montane forests.

These environments are typically humid, elevated and rich in vegetation, which are conditions that support its arboreal lifestyle.

In the wild, Northern Luzon giant cloud rats rarely descend to the forest floor, instead remaining hidden among the treetops. Their elusive nature is one of the reasons they are so rarely encountered, making their presence in Abu Dhabi all the more notable.

Expanding the Butterfly Garden Experience

The addition of the Northern Luzon giant cloud rat reflects the continued evolution of The Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi as more than just a butterfly sanctuary.

With climate-controlled environments designed to replicate tropical conditions, the attraction is steadily building a diverse collection of species from around the world.

For visitors, this new introduction offers a chance to further encounter wildlife that would otherwise require long-distance travel, whilst also highlighting to visitors the importance of conservation on a global scale.
