The weather in Abu Dhabi this week is set to be swept across by rain and thunderstorms, transforming the capital’s typically clear March skies.
The sudden burst of unsettled conditions has brought cooler temperatures and striking cloud formations, as residents adjust to a rare spell of stormy weather in the UAE.
A Sudden Change in Conditions
Abu Dhabi is forecasted to experience a period of atmospheric instability this week, after days of warm and largely stable weather.
Thick cloud cover has moved into the region, creating the conditions for rainfall and thunderstorms across the emirate which has resulted in weather warnings.
These changes are being driven by shifting weather systems across the wider region, resulting in fluctuating temperatures and increased humidity. Winds have also picked up at times, adding to the intensity of the conditions and reducing visibility in some areas.

Thunder, Lightning and Rainfall Across the Capital
Residents in different parts of Abu Dhabi have reported heavy bursts of rain, alongside flashes of lightning and rolling thunder.
In some areas, showers have been brief but intense, while others have seen more sustained rainfall, resulting in grey skies and replacing the usual sunshine.
While rain does occur in the UAE during the winter months, thunderstorms of this intensity are less common heading into spring.
Authorities Urge Caution
With the change in weather, authorities have issued guidance to help residents stay safe. Drivers are being reminded to take extra care on wet roads, where reduced grip and visibility can increase the risk of accidents.
People are also advised to avoid exposed areas during thunderstorms and to stay clear of flood-prone zones.
Coastal conditions may also become rough at times, particularly when winds strengthen in the area.
The current conditions are expected to continue in the short term, with further chances of rain and thunderstorms in the coming days. Skies are likely to remain partly to mostly cloudy, with occasional breaks of sunshine between showers.
At this moment, Abu Dhabi’s residents and visitors can expect a few more days of changeable weather before conditions begin to settle again.
