If you’ve ever added a chocolate bar or fizzy drink to your basket while waiting to pay, that experience could soon become much less common in Abu Dhabi.
From 1 January 2027, supermarkets across the emirate will be required to rethink where they place foods and drinks high in fat, salt, and sugar, as the journey to promote healthier living continues.
Products that are often displayed in attention-grabbing locations, such as entrances, checkout areas and the ends of aisles, will need to be relocated, as part of a new initiative designed to make wholesome choices easier during the weekly shop.

A Different Approach to Supermarket Shopping
For those with a sweet tooth, there’s no need to fear, as the change doesn’t mean these products are being removed from shelves.
Instead, it focuses on reducing impulse purchases by placing them in less prominent locations, while giving nutritious alternatives greater visibility throughout the store.
The policy will apply to larger supermarkets and extends beyond physical shops. Online grocery platforms will also be expected to reduce the prominence of these products, meaning shoppers won’t be greeted with unhealthy snacks through homepage promotions or checkout suggestions in the same way.
Supporting Healthier Choices Across Abu Dhabi
These new rules form part of the city’s wider commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles and creating everyday environments that encourage better habits without restricting consumer choice, whilst also encouraging younger generations to choose healthier foods.
Retailers have several months to prepare before the regulations take effect at the start of 2027, giving businesses time to adapt store layouts and digital shopping experiences. For residents, the biggest difference may simply be what catches their eye first.
Although favourite snacks and soft drinks will still be available, the shopping journey itself is set to change, placing fresh produce and healthier options in the spotlight instead of impulse treats.
It may seem like a subtle adjustment, but it reflects the region’s continued focus on making healthier decisions feel like the easiest ones.
