A red alert has been issued in Abu Dhabi today due to heavy fog across parts of the UAE, with drivers warned to take extra care on the roads.
The National Centre of Meteorology issued the weather warning earlier on Wednesday morning, with fog affecting several areas across the country.
Driving in fog can be dangerous, as reduced horizontal visibility can make conditions difficult and may occasionally lead to near-zero visibility in inland and coastal areas.
According to the NCM, the weather today is expected to be fair to partly cloudy, with clouds possible later at night.
At present, speed limits on Abu Dhabi’s external roads remain normal. However, during severe weather, Abu Dhabi Police may reduce speed limits to 80 kilometres per hour on selected roads.
Motorists are advised to follow the temporary speed limits displayed on electronic road signs and avoid speeding during periods of low visibility.

The NCM has also issued an update on active northwesterly winds, which may reach speeds of up to 40 kph. Sea conditions are expected to become rough at times, with waves in the western Arabian Gulf reaching up to six feet. The alert is in place from 9.30 am until 10pm on Wednesday, July 8.
Residents are encouraged to check the latest weather and traffic updates before commuting or travelling, and to follow official guidance in the event of sudden changes in weather.
Fog is common in the UAE during summer, when warm, moisture-rich air moves inland from the Arabian Gulf and cools overnight. This can lead to early morning fog across coastal and inland areas.
