Etihad Rail Launches Emergency Passenger Trial Between Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia

Etihad Rail has carried out a passenger train trial connecting Al Ghuwaifat, the border crossing to Saudi Arabia, with Abu Dhabi.

This is in coordination with the Emergencies, Crises and Disasters Management Centre Abu Dhabi, with the test journey highlighting the country’s passenger rail infrastructure and reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity across the emirate and beyond.

A Major Step for UAE Rail Development

The route between Al Ghuwaifat and Abu Dhabi is a big step for UAE Rail Development during this period. This measure is key to providing safe and reliable transport alternatives, while supporting evolving circumstances.

By trialling this route, authorities are assessing how passenger rail could complement existing transport links and ensure the continuity of vital services in emergencies.

Testing Operational Preparations

Passenger train trials are designed to evaluate performance across multiple areas. These include safety procedures and coordination between regional authorities.

Such exercises allow teams to refine processes and ensure that infrastructure operates safely and securely in real time.

Beyond the technical assessments, the trial also demonstrates the network’s adaptability and its overall capacity to support broader transport planning.

National Transport Vision

The development forms part of broader ambitions from Etihad Rail, which is leading the creation of the UAE’s national railway network.

The primary goal is to build an integrated, safe, and modern transport network that is open to all and available during times of alleviating factors.

Eng Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, has said: “The operation of passenger services between Al Ghuwaifat and Al Faya as part of the trial demonstrates the readiness and flexibility of the UAE’s national railway network, which is designed to ensure the continuity of vital services in all circumstances.”
