UAE Confirms Ramadan Working Hours

As preparations begin for the holy month, the UAE has officially confirmed revised working hours for Ramadan this year. The annual adjustment aims to support employees observing the month while maintaining productivity across the country.

Ramadan is expected to begin on February 19th (subject to moon sighting), and the updated schedules will remain in place for the duration of the holy month.

Reduced Hours for Private Sector Employees

Private sector employees across the UAE will benefit from a two-hour reduction in daily working hours throughout Ramadan.

This applies to all employees, regardless of whether they are fasting, and is mandated under UAE labour regulations.

Employers are permitted to organise work schedules flexibly, including staggered shifts, remote working options or adjusted start and finish times, as long as the reduced daily hours are observed.

The change is designed to offer greater balance during the month, particularly as fasting hours are longer and daily routines shift.

Public Sector Working Hours Adjusted

For public sector employees, federal government entities will operate under shortened official working hours during Ramadan.

While exact timings are typically confirmed closer to the start of the month, government departments are expected to follow reduced daily schedules that accommodate prayer times and fasting requirements.

Local government authorities may also introduce tailored working hours depending on operational needs, while ensuring consistency with federal guidance.

What Employees Should Know

The reduced working hours during Ramadan are a legal requirement, and organisations are expected to comply fully.

Employees should receive confirmation of their revised schedules directly from their employers, with clear communication around start times, shift changes and any flexible arrangements.

Businesses are also encouraged to create supportive work environments during Ramadan, recognising the physical and spiritual demands of the month.

With Ramadan 2026 approaching, both employers and employees across the UAE are adjusting plans to align with the revised working hours.
