Skywatchers prepare for the Quadrantid Meteor Shower and Wolf Supermoon

2026 is serving up an early treat as the Quadrantid meteor shower aligns with January’s Wolf Supermoon, offering a spectacular night sky show in Abu Dhabi. The two cosmic phenomena are set to promise a memorable start to the new year.

When the Quadrantid Meteor Shower Will Peak

The Quadrantid meteor shower which is active through early January, will reach its peak on the night of January 3rd / 4th (predicted), delivering a brief but powerful display.

This annual event is ideal under dark-sky conditions, with the shower potentially producing up to 80 meteors per hour during its peak. Though these rates hinge on local light and weather conditions on the night.

Why the Wolf Supermoon Makes This Event Unique

But 2026 brings an extra twist to this natural light show. The first full moon of the year known as the Wolf Moon, will coincide with the peak of the Quadrantids.

This moon earns the “Wolf” title from traditional naming conventions linked to early-winter howls and hunting behaviour.

In 2026 it is also set to appear brighter and larger than usual due to its proximity to Earth in orbit, often referred to as a Supermoon.

How Moonlight May Affect Meteor Visibility

It’s important to note that moonlight can dramatically reduce visibility, so that only the intense meteors could stand out against the glow.

For dedicated skywatchers and photographers, however, this combined event offers a rare chance to enjoy both the striking lunar spectacle and bursts of meteoric light.

Best Viewing Tips for Abu Dhabi Skywatchers

The recommended viewing tips include heading to an open location away from city glare and giving your eyes time to adjust to the night sky.

Since the Quadrantids’ peak is short, often just a few hours, early morning hours between late night and dawn on January 3rd / 4th provide the best opportunity to catch this event.

It’s calculated that facing north-east can increase your chances of seeing meteors radiating from the sky’s dome, though they may streak across any part of the sky.

Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer or a curious observer, this organic show makes early 2026 a fantastic time to look up and enjoy nature’s nightly light show.

Keep your binoculars handy, and remember that viewing natural beauty like this can often require a patient game.
