Abu Dhabi is taking a major step forward in how it protects its environment, and this time the work is happening from space.
The Environment Agency, Abu Dhabi, has launched a pioneering pilot project that uses artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to identify illegal waste dumping sites across the emirate.
The initiative marks a shift away from relying solely on field inspections and towards a smarter system capable of detecting and predicting environmental violations.
How the Technology Works
The system analyses satellite images using artificial intelligence to flag suspicious activity linked to illegal dumping.
Instead of responding only after waste has already accumulated, the technology allows authorities to step in earlier, helping to reduce long-term environmental damage.
This approach supports the goals of the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031 and aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader vision for sustainable, smart governance and environmental protection.

Strong Results From the Pilot Phase
The pilot project was carried out in Al Bukariyah in the Al Ain region and delivered impressive results. Using AI-powered satellite analysis, the system identified more than 150 illegal dumping sites compared to just 43 discovered through traditional field monitoring during the same period. Detection accuracy exceeded 90%.
In addition to identifying sites, the system can classify waste types, track how long dumping has been taking place, and analyse changes in affected areas over time. This gives authorities deeper insight into patterns and repeat problem locations.
What This Means for Abu Dhabi Residents
For residents, the benefits are tangible. Faster detection leads to cleaner neighborhoods, reduced environmental risks, and quicker cleanup of affected land.
Once sites are identified, the Environment Agency works with relevant authorities to remove waste and continues monitoring to prevent future dumping.
Following the success of the pilot phase, the project is expected to expand across the entire emirate, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s position as a leader in smart, sustainable environmental protection.
