Ready to witness the skies light up – but this time with the stars themselves? Mark your calendars for another spectacular display of the Geminids Meteor Shower!
The same will be visible in Abu Dhabi skies on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14.
Usually the last one of the year, the Geminids Meteor Shower are one of the most spectacular. With up to 120 meteors streaking across the sky every hour, it’s a potentially colourful display.
You can usually see up to 120 meteors per hour in clear skies, with each travelling at around 120,000 kph, according to NASA. However, this year we might encounter a full moon as well, which might limit some visibility.
Fear not – we’ve found the best places in town and nearby to catch them all!
Where to watch the Geminids meteor shower in the UAE
Al Sadeem Astronomy
Al Sadeem Astronomy is an observatory on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi in the gorgeous Al Wathba.

This spot is perfectly equipped for avid stargazers, with telescopes and regular public stargazing sessions available. See planets, galaxies, and constellations as the staff guides you through the night sky and shares information about astronomy.

Al Quaa Milky Way Spot
This one’s a no-brainer, popular spot for stargazing in the UAE. Located in the desert, this area is known for being one of the darkest spots.

The Geminids Meteor Shower will be easily visible from this spot, of course. There are also several spots where you can set up camp or BBQ stations for the ultimate night out.
Sharjah: Mleiha Archaeological Centre
The archaeological centre in Sharjah usually runs events for stargazing and camping with experts and professional telescopes on hand to give you the best view.

Designed as a complete, serene evening under the stars, the guided program runs from 6 pm to 1 am for standard ticket holders, with an overnight option extending the experience through dawn, as the meteor shower will continue until one hour before sunrise, and concluding with a complimentary breakfast on Sunday, Dec. 14.
Guests will be enjoying a special itinerary designed to balance guided exploration and open viewing. Guests arrive at 6 pm and begin with Saturn observation between 6:15 pm and 7 pm. From 7 pm to 8 pm, the Geminids presentation sets the stage for the night. Jupiter comes into view between 9 pm and 9:30 pm, after which the focus shifts to meteor-watching from 9:30 pm.
The guided session concludes at 1 am; overnight guests may continue observing throughout the night.

Jebel Jais
At over 1,900 metres above sea level, Jebel Jais is the highest peak in the UAE and therefore naturally one of the most spectacular spots for stargazing. The peak offers darker skies and clearer visibility, making it ideal for spotting constellations, the Geminids Meteor Shower, and even the Milky Way on moonless nights.

You can head to the Jebel Jais Observation Deck, perched 1,400 metres above sea level. On any given night, the space transforms into a stargazing haven after dark. And it’s not just the skies, you can also watch the panoramic views of the Hajar Mountains come alive as you witness countless stars, planets, and constellations.
Tips for Stargazing in the UAE

From open deserts with just you and your maps to guided sessions and tours – there’s a stargazing destination perfect for every mood.
