The partnership was announced on the sidelines of the World Governments Summit in Dubai, marking another milestone in the futuristic plans for the city’s public transportation.

The 17 km-long underground transport system is expected to feature 11 stations. The kicker? It’s designed to transport over 20,000 passengers per hour.

The project will facilitate direct travel to the destination station with no stops in between. Travelling at speeds of up to 160 km per hour, the loop will be powered by electric vehicles in keeping with the country’s sustainable aims.

Elon Musk had earlier confirmed plans to enter into a partnership with Dubai to develop the project, while speaking at the World Governments Summit, via video link.

The futuristic transportation system will connect major hubs throughout Dubai, cutting travel time between key points in the emirate to just minutes.

That aside, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are already witnessing some exciting developments what with a high-speed train project connecting the two emirates in just 30 minutes!

It’s certainly an exciting time to be living in the UAE – watch this space for more updates
