Running a Red Light in Abu Dhabi? You Could Face a Dh50,000 Fine and Vehicle Impoundment

Breaking traffic rules in Abu Dhabi is no small matter. Especially when it comes to running a red light. Authorities are taking a zero-tolerance approach, and drivers caught ignoring signals could face some serious consequences.

Under Abu Dhabi’s Law No. 5 of 2020, if you’re caught running a red light, your car can be seized on the spot. To release it, you’ll need to pay Dh50,000. There’s also a 30-day impound period, and if the vehicle isn’t collected within three months, it could be auctioned off.

The same rule covers other forms of reckless driving. Think illegal street racing, hiding or altering your licence plate, damaging police vehicles, or any dangerous driving behaviour.

Police say red light violations are among the most dangerous offences, often caused by distracted driving. Whether it’s texting, checking social media, or even hands-free calls, taking your eyes off the road for even a second can lead to disaster.

And if that mistake results in a fatal crash, things get even more serious. Under Article 40 of UAE traffic law, drivers involved in deadly accidents can face jail time and fines of up to Dh100,000, especially if they were under the influence, using a cancelled licence, or attempting to cross flooded areas.

To stay on the right side of the law, it’s simple: slow down near intersections, stop when the light turns amber, and give the road your full attention. Pedestrians are also urged to cross only when the signal allows.

These rules apply across the UAE. In Dubai, Decree No. 30 of 2023 enforces the same Dh50,000 fine to release an impounded vehicle after a red light offence. Dubai also includes phone use while driving among violations that can lead to vehicle seizure.

In short? Don’t take risks at junctions. It’s not worth the fine—or the consequences.
