There’s a new floating museum coming to Dubai

Are you ready to witness iconic history in the making? There’s a new floating museum coming to the UAE – the Dubai Museum of Art or Duma.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took to X to share some amazing images and videos of the Dubai Museum of Art (Duma).

Rising above the waters on an island in the heart of Dubai Creek, Duma will add to Dubai’s iconic skyline very soon. While we’re still waiting on confirmed opening dates, we can be sure it’s right around the corner.

What can we expect at the floating museum?

The building is a work of art in itself. Its design is inspired by water, sky, wind, and lights and the man behind the masterpiece is none other than world-renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

Dubai Museum of Art - floating museum

Known for his minimalist concrete structures that harmonise with nature through masterful use of light, shadow, and spatial balance, the Dubai Museum of Art is an architectural masterpiece.

The shape itself embodies the symbols of shell and pearl, paying homage to the origins of Dubai’s pearl diving history. At the centre, a cylindrical opening allows natural light to cascade through the structure, evoking the soft shimmer of a pearl.

As a modern arts centre, Dubai Arts Museum will have five floors to showcase works by both renowned and emerging artists.

There will also be a library for learning and training, as well as a restaurant and café, and artistic spaces overlooking Dubai Creek.

And of course, the floating museum will also host talks, panel discussions, educational programmes and art fairs. There will also be a library and study rooms, as well as world-class training programmes designed to nurture future generations of creative leaders.

Think of it as similar to the House of Wisdom in Sharjah, except that the Dubai Museum of Art floats as well!

Watch this space for more updates on opening dates – we can’t wait.
