A New Tunnel Through A Mountain Is Coming To Al Ain

Getting around Al Ain could soon become much easier. Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced a major new infrastructure project to build a tunnel through Naqfa Mountain, creating a faster, more direct connection between Al Sarooj and Al Ain’s Industrial Area.

The AED 291 million development is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make daily journeys more efficient for residents travelling across the city. Designed to support Al Ain’s continued growth, the project will enhance connectivity among key residential, commercial, and industrial areas while creating safer, more accessible transport links.

A major upgrade for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians

The standout feature of the project is a 120-metre tunnel that will pass directly through Naqfa Mountain, helping to shorten routes and reduce travel times between some of Al Ain’s busiest districts.

Alongside the tunnel, a new dual carriageway spanning 3.2 kilometres in each direction will connect Al Masoud Intersection in the Industrial Area with Falcon Roundabout in Al Sarooj. The upgraded route is expected to ease pressure on surrounding roads while improving access between communities.

The benefits won’t stop with motorists. Plans also include 5.2 kilometres of dedicated cycling tracks and six kilometres of pedestrian pathways, making it easier for residents to walk, run and cycle safely around the area. Six new bus stops will also be introduced to support public transport users.

Landscaping forms another key part of the development, with around 500 trees set to be planted along the route. Additional improvements include modern street lighting, upgraded road signage, stormwater drainage infrastructure and utility enhancements designed to support future development in the area.

Construction is now underway, with the project scheduled for completion in June 2027.
