There are few things more exciting than settling in for a day at Saadiyat Beach only to spot something moving through the water. No, it’s not another paddleboarder.
Look a little closer and you might be lucky enough to see a pod of wild dolphins cruising along the shoreline. These incredible creatures have become one of Saadiyat’s most enchanting natural attractions, and there’s a reason why they keep coming back.
The Species
Dolphins most commonly associated with Saadiyat are Indian Ocean humpback dolphins, a coastal species identified by their distinctive body shape and the small hump beneath their dorsal fins.
They are particularly special residents of Abu Dhabi’s waters, as the emirate supports one of the largest known populations of these dolphins worldwide, making the waters around the capital an important habitat for the species.
Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins have also been recorded around Saadiyat, meaning there’s more than one type of dolphin potentially making an appearance.
Why So Close to the Shore
Unlike some dolphin species that spend much of their lives further offshore, Indian Ocean humpback dolphins are very much coastal creatures.
The shallow waters around Saadiyat provide an ideal environment for them to hunt prey and move around, while the wider marine ecosystem offers plenty of food.
This majestic island’s protected waters are also home to an abundance of marine life, creating a pretty appealing neighbourhood for these wild visitors.
And whilst it might feel as though they are deliberately coming over to say hello, they are simply going about their daily lives.
The First Dolphin Sightings
Dolphins have been spotted around Saadiyat for years, with sightings becoming something of a local talking point. One memorable encounter in 2018 saw a large pod, including a mother and calf, swimming remarkably close to Saadiyat Beach.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled for a Dolphin Cameo?
There’s no guaranteed time or season for seeing these dolphins around Saadiyat, so unfortunately, you can’t simply turn up at the beach and expect a pod to be waiting offshore.
These breathtaking sightings are recorded throughout the year, so it’s about being in the right place at the right time, which makes the surprise more special.
