Abu Dhabi’s love for dates was on full display this week, as more than 25,000 people visited the Al Wathba Dates Festival.
The recently concluded celebration brought together farmers, families, and curious visitors for a few days dedicated to one of the UAE’s most important crops, whilst shining a light on the people who continue to grow it.
A Sweet Celebration of Emirati Agriculture
As part of the Sheikh Zayed Festival, the celebration is dedicated to the UAE’s long-standing relationship with date palms and the agricultural traditions surrounding them.
Whilst the dates naturally take centre stage, the event offers visitors plenty of reasons to stick around, with auctions, competitions, and activities that get everyone involved.
Its popularity comes as little surprise, with the festival combining something distinctly Emirati with an atmosphere that allows visitors to discover different varieties of dates whilst experiencing a slice of the country’s agricultural heritage.
Putting Farmers in the Spotlight
For the farmers taking part, the festival is about more than prizes and recognition. It provides an opportunity to showcase their harvests directly to a large audience and introduce visitors to the quality and variety of locally grown dates.
Competitions also encouraged farmers to produce their finest, with the auctions creating another opportunity to promote and sell premium dates.
Dates, Culture and Plenty to Explore
Beyond the dates themselves, visitors could browse traditional stalls, discover locally made products, and enjoy cultural and heritage workshops bringing the festival’s Emirati character to life.
With more than 25,000 visitors making their way to Al Wathba, this year’s festival has shown that the UAE’s agricultural heritage remains very much alive, and that there is clearly no shortage of people keen to celebrate it.
