Abu Dhabi’s biggest cultural opening in years has reached another important milestone.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has officially named Dr Valerie Hillings as its inaugural director, underscoring the museum’s progress ahead of its highly anticipated opening in December 2026.
With the institution edging ever closer to welcoming visitors, the appointment adds fresh momentum to a project that is expected to reshape the region’s contemporary art landscape and further cement Saadiyat Cultural District as a global cultural destination.

A Leader with Global Museum Experience
Dr Valerie Hillings brings extensive experience from some of the world’s leading arts institutions, where most recently, she served as director of The Noguchi Museum in New York.
She impressively guided the organisation through a period of artistic and strategic growth, expanding its public programmes and international profile, earning strong recognition for her efforts.
Before leading and directing teams at The Noguchi Museum, Hillings spent several years in curatorial roles at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, working on collections and research.
Her long-standing connection with the Guggenheim network, combined with her expertise in modern and contemporary art, puts her in a strong position to guide the Abu Dhabi museum as it prepares to welcome visitors.
Another Step Towards a Landmark Opening
Beyond overseeing daily operations, Hillings’ significant appointment will help define the museum’s artistic direction, aim to shape its exhibition programme, and establish its position within the international museum community.
Located within Saadiyat Cultural District and designed by the late and acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, this magnificent development is expected to become the largest museum in the Guggenheim family.
With an opening date now confirmed for next year and a director officially in place, anticipation continues to build. Each milestone brings Guggenheim Abu Dhabi another step closer to bringing art lovers from around the world through those prestigious doors.
